Terms of Use for the Free Version
Free to install and use on as many machines as you like, for personal or commercial work. Your scores stay yours.
Last updated September 25, 2026
These terms cover the free version of Tonograph, the one you download from this site. They are an agreement between you and Noop, LLC. (合同会社Noop), the company that makes Tonograph.
The paid version sold through the Mac App Store or the Microsoft Store is not covered by these terms. That version is licensed under the store’s standard terms — Apple’s Licensed Application End User License Agreement, or Microsoft’s Standard Application License Terms — which apply to every app on the store unless the developer supplies its own.
Your licence
We grant you a free, worldwide, non-exclusive licence to install and use the free version of Tonograph on as many computers as you own or control, for as long as you like. You may use it for personal work and for commercial work alike. No payment, account or registration is required, and you do not have to tell us you are using it.
This licence covers using the software as we distribute it. It does not transfer ownership of the software itself.
What you may not do
- Sell the application, or charge anyone for access to it
- Distribute a modified build of it, or present it as your own work
- Remove or alter the copyright, licence and attribution notices it carries
- Take it apart in order to work around the limits of the free version — except where the law gives you that right regardless of what these terms say
Passing the original, unmodified installer to someone else is fine.
Your scores are yours
We claim no rights over the files you create, open or edit with Tonograph. The scores you write are your work, and nothing in these terms gives us a licence to them.
The free version sends anonymous usage counts, which you can turn off in Settings › General. It never sends your scores or files anywhere. How that data is handled is governed by the Privacy Policy.
The sample scores
Three sample scores ship with the app. Scarlet Engine and Rosewood Letters were written for Tonograph by Noop: you may perform, record, modify and redistribute them, commercially or not, and no attribution is required. Lágrima is a composition by Francisco Tárrega (1852–1909) and is in the public domain; the tablature and fingering in our edition are ours.
Each sample carries its own copyright line inside the file, and that line states the terms for that score.
No warranty
The free version is provided as is, without warranty of any kind. We do not promise that it is free of defects, that it will run on your machine, that it will read every file correctly, or that any particular feature will still be there in a later release. Keep your own backups of work that matters to you.
Limits on our liability
To the fullest extent the law allows, we are not liable for lost work, lost data, lost profits, or any indirect or consequential loss arising out of your use of the free version.
Nothing here limits liability that cannot be limited by law. If you are a consumer, these terms do not take away any rights your local consumer law gives you.
Third-party components
Tonograph includes open-source components that carry their own licences, and those licences continue to apply to those components. The list is on the Third-party licenses page.
Changes
We may change these terms for future releases. When we do, the date at the top of this page changes with them. A change does not apply retroactively to a copy you have already installed; if you do not accept a change, stop using the version it applies to.
Governing law and jurisdiction
These terms are governed by the laws of Japan. Any dispute arising out of them shall be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction, in the first instance, of the district court having jurisdiction over the location of our head office.
