Play notes in
Turn on audio note input and play: each single note is written at the cursor with the current note value, and the cursor moves on. Or play along with a click and get a quantized score.
Each note you play, at the cursor
Audio note input is step entry with a guitar. Play a single note and it’s written at the cursor with the current note value, then the cursor moves on. The same pitch can be played on several strings; Tonograph tells from the tone which one you used, and when it can’t, picks the fingering closest to the previous note. It takes single notes only, not chords.
Hands stay on the guitar
Turn on audio commands and a position you don’t normally play (1st string, 21st fret by default) opens a dial. Play an open string to undo, enter a rest, change the note value, add a dot or move the cursor, and keep going without reaching for the keyboard.
Record in real time
After a bar of count-in, play along with the click. Your take is quantized to quarter, eighth or sixteenth notes and written into the track as a single step you can undo. Slow down to 75% or 50% if you need to, and correct for your interface’s latency.
What it can and can’t do
- What does it write?
- Single notes, one at a time. Audio note input writes each note at the cursor, and real-time recording writes your take quantized to the click.
- Can I play chords?
- No. Chords aren’t recognized in either mode. Enter them with the keyboard.
- Can it turn a recording or an MP3 into tab?
- No. It listens only to a guitar you play live into your audio input. It can’t transcribe recorded audio, such as MP3 or WAV files or the sound of a video.
- Do I need an audio interface?
- It’s recommended. A guitar plugged into an audio interface gives a clean signal. The built-in microphone works too, but it picks up the room along with the guitar.
