Keys for

Audio note inputNew in 1.1.0

Play your guitar one note at a time and write each note into the score at the cursor.

Turn on audio note input#

Click Audio Note Input in the edit palette so that the notes you play become notes in the score.

You can also toggle it with NoteAudio Note Input. It works while audio input is on and the cursor is on a guitar or bass track. Audio note input is off again the next time you start the app.

Play one note at a time#

Each time you pick a string, that note is written at the cursor and the cursor moves on.

Letting a note ring still writes only one note. To write the same note again, pick it again. Chords can’t be written, so play one note at a time.

Writing onto a rest turns that beat into a note. Writing onto a beat that already has notes adds the note to it. At the end of the song, beats and bars are added just as when you press →.

In an empty bar partway through the song, writing one note moves on to the next bar and leaves the remainder of the bar empty. To keep writing in the same bar, first turn on Fill Short Bars With Rests, described in Matching bar length.

Which string is used#

When a pitch can be played in several places, the string is chosen from the tone of the note and how close it is to the previous note.

If the tone doesn’t settle it, the position that needs the least hand movement from the previous note is chosen. Move the cursor’s string with ↑Up and ↓Down beforehand, and the next note leans towards that string. String calibration improves how well tone is used.

Note value#

The length of the written note is the note value selected in the edit palette, not how long you played.

Choose the note value before you play. See Note values, dots and tuplets for how to choose it. To change it without taking your hands off the guitar, use Audio commands.

The status bar#

While audio note input is on, the status bar shows that it’s listening and where the last note was written.

If a note couldn’t be written, the status bar says why. Notes aren’t written during playback or while a dialog is open, nor are pitches that the track can’t play.

Undo#

Each written note can be undone on its own with ⌘ZCtrl+Z.

Beats or bars added at the end of the song are undone together with that note.
