What AI can do
With an AI client connected, AI can read and edit the open song and check the rendered score as an image.
AI reads and writes the current song#
Tonograph acts as an MCP server, so AI clients such as Claude Desktop or Claude Code can read and write the song you have open.
MCP is a standard that lets AI clients use the features of other apps. AI works on the song open in the Tonograph window, so open a song before asking. Connect an AI client explains how to connect.
What it can do#
AI can read the song, change it and export it to files.
- Read: song information, the track list, the contents of bars, text tablature, checks such as bars whose length doesn’t fit, and an image of the rendered score
- Change: song title and tempo, adding tracks, frets and notes, time and key signatures, inserting and deleting bars, tuning, techniques, bends, undo and redo, and replacing the whole song
- Export: saving, and exporting to
.gp, MIDI and audio files
The operations AI can use are listed in Tool list. Anything not on the list, such as playback or pedalboard controls, isn’t possible.
AI edits can be undone#
AI edits go into the same edit history as your own, and ⌘ZCtrl+Z undoes them.
To check what AI will change before it happens, use Approval mode.
No edits during playback#
During playback, edits, undo, replacing the song and audio export from AI are refused.
AI can still read the song during playback.
In the free version#
In the free version, AI can still read and change the song.
Saving and exporting to .gp, MIDI and audio are refused. The refusal is reported to the AI; nothing appears in Tonograph’s window.
Only on this computer#
The MCP server only accepts connections from the same computer.
Connecting requires an access token issued by Tonograph. Whether an AI client sends the song’s contents to its own service depends on that client.
