Keys for

Sections and system breaks

Name parts of the song such as Intro or Chorus, and start a new system at any bar you choose.

Add a section#

Press ⌘⇧MCtrl+Shift+M to open a dialog that names a section at the bar under the cursor.

From the menus, choose BarSection…. Enter a name such as Intro in Text and a short mark such as A in Marker. The mark can be up to four characters. In the score, the mark and name appear above the bar.

To remove a section, clear the name and click Apply, or click Delete Section.

Break the system at any bar#

Press ⌘⏎Ctrl+Enter to make the bar under the cursor the start of a new system.

From the menus, choose BarSystem Break Here. Press it again to remove the break. Between breaks, the score still wraps automatically to fit the width. Bar 1 always starts a system, so you can’t put a break there. System breaks also apply to PDF and printing.

Song breaks and track breaks#

A system break goes into the track if one instrument is being drawn, or into the whole song if two or more are.

Breaks placed in single-track view belong to that track and don’t appear in multi-track view. Breaks placed in multi-track view belong to the whole song and don’t appear in single-track view. If a break you placed isn’t showing, check which view you’re in. Single and multi-track views explains how to switch views. A grand-staff piano counts as one instrument.

Hide the break marks#

Where a system break is placed, a ↵ mark appears at the right edge of the bar that ends the system.

The mark only appears on screen, not in PDF or printouts. Under System Break Marks, turn off Show a mark where a system break is forced on the Display tab of TonographSettings…FileSettings… to hide the marks. It’s on at first. Turning it off doesn’t remove the breaks. The setting is kept the next time you start the app.

Clefs and barlines#

Structure & Symbols in the inspector also changes per-bar signs such as clefs and barlines.

Clef, Simile and Bar Number apply only to that bar of the track under the cursor. Bar Line (left) and Bar Line (right) are shared by every track.
